Santa Barbara Wine Festival 2012

The three-day Santa Barbara Wine Festival kicks off at the historic De La Guerra Adobe Courtyard with the Old Spanish Nights Tapas and Wine Tasting on Thursday, July 19th from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., showcasing some of the finest wines from Spain and Santa Barbara. There will be traditional live music by Luna Gitana, spicy tapas appetizers and flamenco dancing.

On Friday, July 20th from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. the new Riedel Wine Glass Seminar & Tasting will allow participants to learn about the science of wine glasses. Take home a four-piece boxed set of wine glasses. Later, from 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m., the Sunset Rare & Reserve Wine Tasting takes place at the charming old-world carousel at Chase Palm Park Plaza, where there will be samplings of extremely limited reserve level wines matched with gourmet appetizers, artisan cheeses and fresh strawberries dipped in a chocolate fountain.

The event ends with a beachside bash on Saturday, July 21,  from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. with samplings of more than 350 fine wines from every region of California during the Beachside Food & Wine Fest. More than 40 wineries will offer their best selections paired with gourmet appetizers. Regional breweries and distilleries will also offer craft beer and spirits.

A portion of net proceeds is donated to the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County.

“The mission of the Foodbank is to provide nourishment to those in need by acquiring and distributing safe nutritious foods via local agencies and providing education to solve hunger and nutrition problems in Santa Barbara County. During 2009, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County distributed 9.2 million pounds of food from two warehouse locations in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria.”

2. Riedel Wine Glass Seminar & Tasting on Friday, July 20, 2012 Riedel Wine Glass Seminar & Tasting | New to this year’s festival! 4:30 – 6 pm Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort’s Reagan Room 633 East Cabrillo Boulevard, Santa Barbara, CA

The California Wine Festival will host a Riedel “Glassware Journey” tasting/seminar where attendees will explore how the shape and size of the glass effects the perception of the wine on the palate. This educational and fun seminar and wine tasting will be conducted by an expert from the world famous Riedel Glassware Company, preeminent wine glassware manufacturer. Each attendee will receive their own set (to take home) of four varietal specific wine glasses (valued at $123) for the seminar/tasting. Santa Barbara Vintners’ Festival Weekend 2012 in California

It’s time to get your Vintners’ Visa for the Santa Barbara Vintners’ Festival Weekend 2012. This passport will get you into twelve winery tasting rooms.  Some wineries will present unique events, ranging  from Winemaker’s Dinners and barrel tastings.

There are four official Santa Barbara appellations: Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Rita Hills. Within the broad Santa Barbara County designation, there are several other micro-regions: the Los Alamos Valley region, Ballard Canyon, the Los Olivos District and Santa Maria.  The county has more than 115 wineries and 21,000 acres  of vineyards in the county’s Central Coast American Viticultural Areas: Santa Maria Valley AVA, Santa Ynez Valley AVA, Sta. Rita Hills AVA, and Happy Canyon AVA each with its own distinct terroir. The Los Olivos AVA and Ballard Canyon AVA are in the process of becoming official AVAs.

The first wine grapes in Santa Barbara County were planted by the missionaries associated with Mission Santa Barbara late in the 18th century. Santa Barbara County has become a prominent viticultural region.  The film Sideways was filmed in this area of California. The region is famous for ChardonnayPinot Noir and Rhone varietals including Syrah and Viognier. Santa Barbara wine grapes command some of the highest prices in the state. The Foxen Canyon Wine Trail is situated about an hour from Santa Barbara and Los Olivos. The annual Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Festival Weekend attracts food and wine lovers who wish to meet vintners, taste their wines and enjoy great food and music over a long spring weekend in gorgeous Santa Barbara. The Vintners’ Festival is hosted by the more than one hundred vintners and winemakers who will be pouring their latest releases of the over fifty-four varietals that are grown in Santa Barbara County.

On Saturday, April 21st, from 1 to 4pm at The Carranza over 100 Santa Barbara member wineries gather to present their local wines, often poured by the winemakers themselves. The Festival presents some of the best local cuisine from restaurants, catering companies and purveyors of specialty foods. The festival will also feature live music. There will be a Silent Auction to benefit local charities and art displays from local artists.
