Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, is the fourth-largest city in the Mexican state of Guerrero. Zihuatanejo is now the third most visited area in Mexico after Cancún and Puerto Vallarta.

In 1968, the Bank of Mexico created a special fund for the creation of new tourist destinations on the country’s spectacular coastlines. Ixtapa humble beginings as a government-planned tourist resort in the early 1970s, was originally a coconut plantation and mangrove estuary. The development of Ixtapa was supported by a loan from the World Bank.
