Fontainebleau Miami Beach

WHEN: Wednesday, April 18 through Saturday, April 21, 2012

Pool at the Fontainebleau Hotel

I love the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel. It is one of my favorite Vino con Vista destinations in Miami Beach! It is also the most historic and architecturally significant hotel on Miami Beach.  It was designed by Morris Lapidus and opened in 1954. On December 22, 2008, the Fontainebleau was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis broke the integration barrier in Miami Beach at this hotel. Jerry Lewis waged his war against Muscular Dystrophy at this hotel with his Labor Day Marathon fund-raising events.

The hotel was also the setting for Jerry Lewis‘s 1960 comedy film, The Bellboy.

The hotel and pool were featured in the following films: Scarface, Go for It , Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach and  The Bodyguard (1992) with Whitney Houston.

The Fontainebleau Miami Beach is the perfect setting for the Miami Beach Wine Festival. It is situated on the Atlantic oceanfront at Collins Avenue in the heart of Millionaire’s Row with 12 restaurants and bars; and a 40,000-square-foot spa.

Here are the United Way Miami Wine & Food Festival details headlined by Bravo’s Top Chef Season 7 winner, Kevin Sbraga and Fontainebleau’s Executive Chef, Thomas Connell:

Giving your Sweetie a rose or a book on Saint Jordi’s Day in Barcelona. This charming tradition in Barcelona, is like participating in a fairy tale festival.

Once upon a time in the town of Montblanc in Catalunya, a terrible dragon terrorized the inhabitants.

A lottery system was generated to appease the miserale, rotten dragon. The system sacrificed one of the town residents to the dragon using a lottery system.
Unfortunately, one day the princess won the lottery and had to be sacrificed. She was rescued from the dragon’s wrath by a handsome knight in shining armour named Jordi (George).

La Diada de Sant Jordi is also known as  El dia de la Rosa (The Day of the Rose) or El dia del Llibre (The Day of the Book).  Historically, men gave women roses and women gave men a book to celebrate the occasion: “a rose for love and a book forever.”

Saint George (Saint Jordi) is the patron saint of Catalonia. Saint Jordi’s Day in Barcelona Spain is a Catalon Holiday that celebrates the chivalrous efforts of dragon-slaying, damsel- in-distress rescuing Saint George. In 1995, UNESCO adopted April 23rd as World Book and Copyright Day. Barcelona is the publishing capital of both Catalan and Spanish languages.

On April 23rd,  six million roses will change hands in Barcelona when men become knights for a day. They will give their sweetie a single rose to honor Saint George, the patron saint and protector of the inhabitants of Catalonia who rescued the princess from the terrible dragon. He gave her a red rose plucked from a rose bush that sprouted from the dragons blood after the dragon was killed by St. Jordi’s mighty sword.

On April 23rd, lovers walk arm in arm on Las Ramblas toward the sea or in the direction of Placa Catalunya gazing at the lovely flower stalls and visiting La Boqueria Market.

Lovers also stroll along the Passeig de Gracia buying books from street vendors and book stores. In 1923, the tradition of giving your damsel a rose was expanded. Damsels give their knight in shining armour a book.

April 23rd commemorates the anniversay of the deaths of Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare in 1616. Many book stores and cafes host readings by authors including 24-hour marathon readings of Cervantes’ “Don Quixote“.

In Barcelona, visit Gaudi’s Casa Batllo (House of Bones) on Passeig de Gracia, 43. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The magnificent art noveau structure is located on the “Block of Discord” with incredible buildings designed by famous architects like Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Lluis Domenech i Montaner and Enric Sagnier.

Casa Batllo has a facade based on the Tale of Saint Jordi (Saint George). The bones of the dragon’s victims frame the elaborate windows of the facade. The facade is covererd with trencadis glazed mosaic tile. The roof  has a large arch that represents the scales of the dragon.
